Food and beverages
At a time when the impacts of climate change and the scarcity of resources are becoming ever more visible, the discourse about the ecological footprint of our diet is gaining more importance. Making the change to a plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways in which we can reduce our ecological footprint. At the University of Vienna, the ‘Verpflegung’ (sustainable meals) working group of the Sustainability Advisory Board is actively promoting food sustainability. It identifies relevant topics, develops recommendations and proposals for measures, and coordinates with responsible stakeholders in order to establish a future-oriented University.

To the Interview (in German)
Sustainability at the University of Vienna
Unlike in Germany, in Austria there is no legal mandate to provide catering for university members. Nevertheless, the University of Vienna actively promotes ecologically sustainable meals. The University helps in making your decision to lead a plant-based diet easier by deliberately choosing purely vegan and vegetarian catering firms for newly leased cafeteria locations. For example, the cafeteria at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz (OMP) and at the UBB (both operated by Library Café) offer vegan and vegetarian meals.
