Discovering diversity: Impressions of the Biodiversity Day at the University of Vienna

On May 22, 2024, the University of Vienna campus was all about biodiversity.

The Biodiversity Working Group of the Sustainability Council put together a varied program that was very well received by the participants.

A special highlight of the program was the Botanical Garden's plant market, which delighted staff, students and the neighborhood alike. A variety of indoor and outdoor plants could be purchased here. The Infopoint, which provided information about biodiversity and its protection in Vienna as well as the relevant research at the University of Vienna and the Natural History Museum, also attracted many visitors.

A guided tour by Öko Campus Wien on biodiversity on the university campus also aroused great interest. This tour provided participants with valuable insights into local biodiversity.

The BioBlitz, a 24-hour challenge in which as many species as possible were to be discovered on campus, was particularly successful. A total of 60 people took part in the search and identification of species. Over 85 species were found, including numerous insects, plants and fungi. This underlines once again that the campus of the University of Vienna is an important hotspot of urban biodiversity. The findings can be admired under the following link: BioBlitz finds

Prizes were raffled off among all participants, including identification literature and plants from the Botanic Garden. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation.

We would also like to thank Öko Campus Wien, the Botanic Garden and the members of the Biodiversity Working Group for their excellent cooperation.
