- Alliance of Sustainable Universities in Austria
The Alliance of Sustainable Universities in Austria is an Austrian network of universities that aims to integrate sustainability in the areas of teaching, research and operations, as well as to develop collective strategies.
- UniNEtZ (website in German)
An alliance of Austrian universities with the aim to contribute to the implementation of the SDGs, with a focus on interdisciplinary research and concrete options for action.
- European University Association (EUA)
The EUA supports universities throughout Europe in integrating sustainability into their strategies, research, teaching and operations.
- Circle U. Knowledge Hub on Climate
Working group by Circle U. universities on the subject of the climate.
- Green Labs Austria
The association Green Labs Austria was founded in 2020 and promotes greater sustainability in research laboratories. Its goal is to reduce energy consumption, resource usage and waste production during daily work in the lab without sacrificing academic quality.
At the University of Vienna and beyond there are numerous networks, groups and initiatives where students can get involved – from climate protection and biodiversity to socio-ecological transformation. The following networks and initiatives provide great opportunities to become active:
- Office for Sustainability and International Affairs (ÖH Uni Wien)
The Office for Sustainability and International Affairs of the Austrian Students Union of the University of Vienna (ÖH Uni Wien) promotes sustainability, climate protection and environmental protection.
- Students of the Alliance of Sustainable Universities (website in German)
This working group unites Austrian student groups and initiatives as well as the environment and sustainability offices of individual student unions at university level and federal level.
- CliMates Austria
CliMates Austria is an NGO and part of the international youth network CliMates. CliMates organises the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in Austria, the youth delegates for climate conferences, the ‘ClimSchool’ project and the media project ‘klimareporter.in’.
- Climate Walk
The Climate Walk is a combined research, educational and media project by the group ‘Wanderers of Changing Worlds’. Participants hike all across Europe to understand regional experiences with climate change.
- Plant-Based Universities
Plant-Based [JP1] Universities is an international student movement promoting plant-based meals at universities – for climate, health and sustainability.
- Öko Campus Wien (website in German)
Established in 2021, the association Öko Campus Wien (Eco Campus Vienna) promotes the implementation of measures for the preservation and restoration of urban biodiversity on the Campus of the University of Vienna and beyond. Furthermore, the association offers learning formats on the topics of urban ecology, art and wildlife protection, as well as research and nature education.
- StOAK (website in German)
StOAK is a non-partisan community of students who promote nature conservation. At StOAK students can exchange information, gain new perspectives in evening debates and learn new things about Austrian ecosystems on exciting nature trips.
Networks and working groups within the University

AGNIS (Sociology)
AGNIS is the working group for sustainability at the Department of Sociology of the University of Vienna and has been working since 2020 to promote a stronger integration of sustainability issues at the Department of Sociology (article in German).

Sustainability working group of the University Library
The University Library’s sustainability working group aims to contribute to reducing the ecological footprint of the Vienna University Library (UB Wien).

CampSus (Life Sciences)
The CampSus Network supports sustainable development at the Faculty of Life Sciences and works to achieve the sustainability goals at the University of Vienna.

FGGA Sustainability Board
Established in 2025, the sustainability board coordinates the sustainability agendas of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy.

Sternwarte Sustainability Group
The sustainability group’s dedicated staff aim to make the Vienna University Observatory more ‘green’ and energy-efficient.

Climate@MaxPerutzLabs
Created in 2019, this initiative by employees of the Max Perutz Labs aims to improve sustainable practice in the areas of teaching and research at the Max Perutz Labs.
